Hey,
A Wall St. buddy in his 40's has been dating a cool Fashion buyer in her late 20's. She's a trophy girlfriend. When they go out to clubs they always get in because she's very attractive. They always get invited to great media and fashion events because of her connections. She's been his gateway for getting into the Beautiful People Scene in NYC. His selling point is that he's a solid guy with a good finance job and a few of million saved up from a few good bonus years.
One day at a cash machine he holds up his receipt showing that he’s got $95,000 in his checking account. She then suggests he help her pay off her high interest credit card loan of $8,000. Since he's totally into her he pays off her $8k loan and says she can pay him $500/month for the next 16 months, therefore creating an interest free loan. So far 3 months have past and she has not paid back a dime. He’s annoyed but has not said anything to her.
So let me ask you this. Should he simply turn this loan into a gift and count his blessings or should he establish some kind of financial boundary?

There is no such thing as a LOAN when you are datting... *k is cheap for a hot 20 y/o that is hooking him up in a life that he could never get into on his own.
He should count his blessings and move on. She is only into him for his money, he has no selfrespect and if he thinks he is getting a dime back his firm should fire him.
There is no such thing as LOAN WHEN YOU ARE DATING...
I do not feel she owes him anything,I think he is a cheap ass looking for something for nothing, he enjoy spending time in her social circle, nothing is free she should NEVER have to ask him for any thing,he wanted her to see his bank balance, the guy is a show off that's why he is with her,so he should pay.
Seems like a match made in heaven ( LOL)- Insecure idiot, and a bimbo gold digger. They tend to have symbiotic relationship. What did you expect--that she wanted for you body? and you wanted her for her integrity? The simpliest things in life tend to have simple answers.
There some old saying about not making a loan that you can't afford to write off!
If the guy is who I think he is, you're doing him a disservice - he adds more to the relationship than is given. Anyway, if he really expected the money back, then assuming nothing has been said so far, some diplomacy in asking would be required, or he writes it off as a (hopefully gratefully accepted and remembered) expense.
As an aside $95k sat dormant in a checking account doesn't seem very financially astute unless it was only therer to impress ;)
Troulble is with money, if you use it for display, the women expect you to spend it on stuff displayed in shop windows.
I think he should cut her some slack. She prob wouldn't have asked for the money if she didn't need it. Finances are one of the most common reasons couples fight, and if he could afford he should just let it be water under the bridge.
Pretty stupid flaunting money like that; to a significant other, if you would want it back. If she took you to all these high end events like you said consider it a pay back.
Don't be cheap. It's her or the money. But it's worse than that! . Understand, if you press for the money you loose her and the money. If she really has a stash of cash you could ask her for some money for a legit business deal.
The older rich guy should realize that he's just a "sugar daddy" and the girl his "sugar baby." Now that they have the terms of the relationship defined, he can continue to pay for sex and she can continue to deliver.
well, this guy is an idiot for trying to show off with his bank receipt, however, she should be a mensch and pay him back as she said she would (if the conversation went as it was posted)...there's a verbal agreement and she should honor it...the guy who says he should run, don't be so quick to judge since he said she's in it for the money...clearly, he's in it because she's a babe and he is 'being seen' where he wants to be...men are weird...(also, if he were that smart, he wouldn't have $95K in his checking account)...
As long as she continues to do you on a regular basis then $8,000 over the course of a year is a steal! As a matter of fact the fact that you have asked for the money back might have blown the deal for you. Also the fact that you are worried about this means you probably feel you can't get anything else close to her quality. If I were you I would tell her that you decided to give her a gift and chalk it up to the cost of dating a hot young piece.
Well...He would of had to spend a lot more than 8k to buy his way into her social circle- even the not so hot ones in that circle expect a lot from the men they are with...he got a discount..and deep down it doesn't bother him as much as he says--all those guys like the feeling they get when they are with a beautiful woman- thats why hes been working so hard his entire life-- she can be with anyone..he should just appreciate her and ride it out for all its worth
They deserve each other.
gift it, worse mistake i ever made was not paying off car debt of young hottie girlfriend. what's your money for? doctors and lawyers? buy her some jewelry too, that's worth some fun!
WOW, why can't I meet guys like this!!! He should set up some financial boundaries because Good guys finish last. She saw, took and ran. He won't see that money and unless there is some future for these two, this is the beginning of what is to come.
Did he do his credit check? Did he not take security? As he’s not said anything, she probably does think it’s a gift. Women are funny like that.
I once lent $100 to a long term female friend who I ended up in bed with the same night. When I asked for the money back the following day, she said it was not appropriate because we had slept together. I told her we had words to describe girls like that. She paid up pretty sharpish.
He should withhold sex until she gets up-to-date with the payments.
He could tell her if she doesn’t pay, he’ll call it payment for services and then she’ll have to pay tax on it.
He might even be able to write it off against his taxes!
